We kept right on walking, sidestepping insanity

now we're running redlights to hide or survive or to get nowhere at all
flooded by the headlines that left us empathy deprived
with stupidity as our grandest praise
we walk un-fazed and swinging at everything in site

There was a war inside us and we couldnt see the scheme
the lasting light hung dull enough to not give us up
so when the doors opened, we were the last ones standing
and you looked through me as it all went by

I ran every red light to get back to the tracks in time
and i learned it's the little things that keep us going
like names and a date carved in the trestle frame
reminding me not to run in front of that train

Most of us just want to live outspoken
and forged anew in the path we were convinced of
we'll live to lift these hanging heads
they get nothing more from us.
